Reston, VA, May 29, 2024 – The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) reported a continued decline in U.S. kitchen cabinet sales, with figures down 7 percent in January 2024 compared to January 2023. This downturn reflects ongoing challenges within the new construction and residential remodeling sectors.
According to KCMA’s latest monthly Trend of Business Survey, total sales for January 2024 were $214.2 thousand. Custom cabinet sales declined sharply by 18.2 percent to $53.4 thousand. Semi-custom cabinet sales fell 3.7 percent to $120.7 thousand, while stock cabinet sales increased modestly by 1.3 percent, reaching $40.2 thousand.
Year-to-Date Sales Analysis
The first two months of 2024 recorded a 6.1 percent decline in sales compared to the same period in 2023. This trend points to a challenging start for the kitchen cabinet and bath vanity market, potentially driven by broader economic pressures and shifting consumer spending habits in the home improvement sector.
Implications and Industry Outlook
The ongoing decline in sales carries significant implications for manufacturers, retailers, and the broader home improvement industry. The increase in stock cabinet sales may indicate a shift toward more budget-conscious purchasing or evolving design preferences. As the industry navigates these conditions, stakeholders may need to emphasize innovation, operational efficiency, and deeper insight into consumer demand to restore growth and stability.
KCMA’s data continues to serve as an important indicator of the kitchen and bath cabinetry market’s health, offering critical insights for businesses planning within a volatile economic environment. Industry participants are closely monitoring these trends to better understand the forces shaping demand and to develop strategies that mitigate the impact of declining sales.
Market Estimates and Additional Insights
Despite declining cabinet sales, estimated overall market sales for January were reported at $1.3 million, slightly higher than December’s $1.2 million. Year-to-date estimated market sales also stood at $1.3 million.
KCMA additionally reported a 9.7 percent decline in cabinet and vanity sales for March 2024 compared to March 2023, following decreases of 7.0 percent in January and 5.6 percent in February. Year-to-date sales through March were down 7.3 percent versus the same period in 2023. March’s decline was led by a 21.5 percent drop in custom cabinet sales, a 5.3 percent decrease in semi-custom sales, and a 3.1 percent decline in stock cabinets.
“The kitchen cabinet industry is navigating a challenging period, but we remain optimistic about the long-term outlook as the market adjusts and recovers,” said a KCMA spokesperson.
